Gallery IRO Room1,2 @gallery_iro

How to Recognize a Ghost Ship

Dates: September 9 (Wed) – 13 (Sun)
Hours: 12:00 – 18:00
Venue: Gallery IRO Room1,2 @gallery_iro

When you bend over and look backward through your legs,a ship may appear to be sailing slightly above the surface of the sea.
That is a ghost ship.

Form your hands into a certain shape and look through the opening between them.
You may see a landscape from another world.

With the slightest deviation of our gaze,
the world reveals another aspect of itself.

What I paint is the threshold
where our perception begins to waver.

Through painting, I attempt to hold onto an ambiguous state in which front and back, inside and outside, reality and another world coexist, allowing the wavering itself to emerge as a phenomenon.

Weathered Grain
410×318mm
color on paper

Wood grain is a pattern formed naturally, revealing different shapes and images depending on how we look at it.
The stains left on weathered wood can sometimes appear beautiful, and at other times resemble human faces. I created this work hoping that the world glimpsed through its gaps would reveal different aspects depending on each viewer’s perception.
